Volleyball Match Notes: MCM Elegante Lobo Classic Tournament

Idaho State begins its season at the MCM Elegante Tournament facing Loyola Marymount, tournament host New Mexico and Central Arkansas. The Bengals held a black and white scrimmage to prepare for the tournament. The Bengal black team defeated the Bengal white team 3-1 at Reed Gym. Four Bengals, freshman Jaclyn Hone, sophomore Britta Bartschi, junior Emily Waldron and senior Brenda Cooper, each recorded double-doubles in kills and digs.

About Idaho State
Idaho State's roster features four freshmen, three sophomores, five juniors and two seniors, splitting the upperclassmen and underclassmen evenly. ISU enters the 2008 season begins with a fresh start as new head coach Chad Teichert leads the Bengals. Last season ISU posted an overall record of 6-23 with a 2-14 Big Sky record, finishing eighth in the conference. ISU posted an away record of 3-8 and was 3-2 in five set matches. The Bengals recorded 1,437 kills in 2007 with an attack percentage of .177 and posted 1,705 digs. Idaho State also recorded 131 service aces and 1.83 blocks per game.
Preseason Poll
The Idaho State volleyball team was picked eighth in the 2008 preseason poll with 12 points. However, the Three starters return to lead the Bengals this season, including senior Blakely Peppinger, junior Emily Waldron and sophomore Sarah Carson. Portland State was chosen to win the 2008 regular conference when they received five first-place votes for a total of 61 points. Rounding out the ninth spot in the poll is Montana State, the only Big Sky Conference victories ISU recorded last season.
About Loyola Marymount
Loyola Marymount will prove to be a tough match for the Bengals as they continue on its 18th consecutive winning season and finished fourth in the West Coast Conference under head coach Steve Stratos. LMU finished the 2007 season with a 16-13 overall record and an 8-6 conference mark. Loyola Marymount opens its season against the Bengals after it prepared with an Alumni match.
The Lions return four starters including ALL-WCC selection Emily Day. Day finished the 2007 season among West Coast conference leaders in points per game (fifth, 4.84), kills per game (sixth, 4.00), service aces per game (eighth, 0.34) and digs per game (11th, 3.21). She was also the team leader in service aces (36), solo blocks (20), block assists (68) and total blocks (88) from last season.
Loyola Marymount Series Info
Loyola Marymount leads 3-0 in contests against Idaho State, however ISU has not had a match with the Lions since 2002. LMU overcame ISU 3-0 on September 21 when they had a home court advantage.
About New Mexico
New Mexico goes into the MCM Elegante Lobo Classic as its season opener. The Lobos prepared for the tournament in a similar fashion to the other participants of the Tournament with an Alumni match. The 2008 squad defeated the alumni 3-0 on Saturday, August 23, 25-18, 25-11, 25-17. New Mexico was 16-13 overall last season and finished sixth in the Mountain West Conference with a 7-9 record. The Lobos return ten letter winners and welcome two newcomers to the team.
New Mexico Series Info
It has been 11 years since ISU has had the opportunity to compete against New Mexico. Idaho State was victorious 3-1 over the Lobos on September 5 at Oregon. However, New Mexico leads 6-4 in contests.
About Central Arkansas
The Sugar Bears come off a Purple and Gray intersquad scrimmage as they head into the Lobo Classic. Two of the University of Central Arkansas' players were named to the Preseason All-Southland Conference First Team: junior setter Robyn Smith and sophomore middle blocker Chloe Smith, the leagues last two Freshmen of the Year. Smith was All-Southland First Team leading the league, and ranked 46th in the nation, with 12.50 assists per game. Smith was second in Southland with 2.85 kills per came and recorded 435 kills.
The Sugar Bears went 24-9 over the 2007 season and 10-6 in conference play, and finished the year with the highest winning percentage season in their school history. On neutral ground, similar to the MCM Elegante Logo Classic, Central Arkansas posted a perfect 7-0 record. The Sugar Bears finished third in the Southland-East Conference.
Black and White Intersquad Scrimmage Recap
The Bengal volleyball team played an intersquad scrimmage Saturday afternoon at Reed Gym where the Black team defeated the White team in four games 25-15, 25-23, 21-25 and 15-9.
Four players, two from each team had double-doubles in kills and digs. On the black team, sophomore Bartschi recorded 11 kills and 18 digs while Hone, a freshman, had 13 kills and 17 digs. On the white team, veteran junior Waldron had 13 kills and 11 digs while senior Cooper recorded an impressive 15 kills with only two errors. Her attack percentage was an excellent .406 from 32 attempts. Cooper also recorded 16 digs.
The teams were evenly matched recording ten block assists each. However, the black team committed fewer hitting errors with only 16 for the match and produced 55 kills. The white team committed 23 attack errors and forced 46 kills.
